Browser Security

One of my main concerns on the internet is security, and the browser I use is one of the most important factors in keeping my information secure.

Let's look at the current Secunia reports for three popular browsers.

IE7 Secunia Report

Critical

I personally don't even consider Internet Explorer a contender when it comes to security. Microsoft chose to attach the browser to the Operating system (Windows) which is a major security risk in itself, but as you can see there are a lot of security issues with IE and this makes it not an option in my book. If Microsoft ever decided to separate IE from Windows and continue to fix the mutitude of security issues then I would consider it again, but not until then. Microsoft has recently released IE7 so we'll see what changes are in store as far as security goes.

Firefox is a good browser. I have been watching it since it came out, and from a security standpoint it is much better than IE. However, it still has many problems as you can see, so I personally don't use it, other then for testing purposes. Firefox 2 has come out and is much better than version 1 as far as security, I like the direction of Firefox and consider version 2 a very good browser.

Opera Secunia report

Opera is my first choice for many reasons, but the topmost reason is the security of the browser and the attitude about security from the developers and CEO of the company.

Opera 9 was recently released with a lot of new features. I will be doing a full report on IE7 vs Opera 9 vs Firefox 2.0 when they become more mature.

"I downloaded Opera years ago and I've never looked back. It's a great, powerful browser, and I don't need to look around for an alternative.
